Hello again, I have my engine all rebuilt and together. However while hooking up the rectifier I snapped off one of the studs. In my hurry to get this thing on the water I stopped at Radio Shack and picked up a full wave rectifier. It's a 12V and I don't recall the amperage. Something like 30. Nothing too crazy. Now when I try and fire it up all I get is a weak spark, sometimes. Could the rectifier be at fault? Or would it just run on battery power during cranking? Spark is weak at best when it does happen. Boat ran OK last time it ran (about 3 years ago) it was way down on compression.

Thanks!!!

fukawi seems to be a wiz at this kind of stuff.

fukawi seems to be a wiz at this kind of stuff.

When you picked up your new rect. Did they cross it with the old one or were you guessing? Im not a pro at the electrical on outboards but I believe when the flywheel spins the stater picks up electricity spinning next to the magnets under the flywheel. Stater sends ac to rect. and is converted to dc so the battery can charge. It also has to send enough current to the cdi packs which is then sent to cds or coils then to the spark plugs. I would be looking for bad grounds, loose wires. Are you getting weak spark on all four cylinders? Like I said im not a pro at the electrical but I would start with the easy and work up from there. Do you have a force repair manual for your motor?
Its a must and will help you with the repairs you may need to do. Well if nothing else you did get some kind of response. Lololol!!!

I don't have a manual. I've been doing it by memory and the internet (for the torque specs and a few wires). I just went to Radio Shack and picked up one that looked to fit the bill. I have no way of figuring out the specs on my own.

Sounds like a bad stater but could also be loose or broken magnets under the flywheel. You really need to start testing to make sure though. From what I have read on some other threads you can go to outboardignition.com for testing procedures on all of your electrical. Get yourself a manual for your force motor. It also has testing procedures on your electrical. I use the clymer manual and its been very helpful.

The starter engages and turns just fine. It cranks well. That's when I get the spark... The magnet was on the flywheel just fine as well. I'm really just trying to get it to run so I can sell it because I have no place to store it come winter.

That's great the starter works well. What I said was (stater), that is under the flywheel. Need to test and outboardignition.com can help you with testing procedures as well as other electrical.
