I just moved this force to my barge. Was waiting on longer cables before I removed the short cables it started everytime the instant I hit the key 30 minutes later- new cables are on- no boat cranks sometimes for 30 seconds before firing- read somewhere it could be the neutral switch which I had 5o adjust the cable to make it throw correctly in both directions. I dont understand how that can cause this

With change in cable it is not unusual the idle setting was also affected. Check make sure the idle setting is correct, i.e. ~1500 rpm on muffs, idle and 750~800 rpm idle in gear in water.

And yes, if the idle setting is too low, it makes starting very hard if not impossible.

The neutral switch purpose is to prevent starting the motor while still in gear. If the control lever is in neutral and you can actually crank over the motor with the starter, (but not when control lever is in gear, fwd or reverse) then the neutral switch is working properly.

I clamped down the shift and throttle arms before I removed the old cables and adjusted the new ones exactly to where they fit before I unclamped them. I guess I can try adjusting the throttle one in just a bit

Are you setting the control lever in fast idle position when starting? Does it actually makes it easier to start with the lever in fast idle position? If not, can you get another person to do the starting while you hold carbs' throttle half way open and see if that makes starting easier? If it does, then idle setting needs some adjusting.

I've never needed yo use fast idle, it always just starts literally in a second or 2, I tried fast idle last night and it didnt change anything

When you get a chance can you post a pic of the cam and roller with control lever in neutral? A close up pic showing the position of the mark with the roller will be very helpful in diagnosis.
