1989 Johnon Power Pack replacement???

i have a 1989 Johnson 90Hp outboard. i'm having power pack issues. the motor currently has both of the original power packs, and both are cracked on the back. i ordered a new power pack and the one they sent me is the replacement part for them. i am guessing that this one power pack will take the place of both of the ones that are currently on the motor since it has the receptacle going to all 4 coil packs. well, my question is, the new power pack is almost twice as big as the current ones. any idea where i'm supposed to mount this new one? and am i correct in assuming this 1 power pack is meant to replace both the old one's?

Thanks for any and all advice on this issue.

Re: 1989 Johnon Power Pack replacement???

i ordered from boats dot net and yes i gave them the correct model number. i called ********** and they told me that OEM has super seeded the parts? and that i should contact OEM. they gave me the help line, but of course they are closed. i just went back and looked at the 2 old power packs, i am not sure how in the world i could hook 1 up and use if for both. i think they sent me the wrong part, but when you look at any other boat motor web site, they all say its the same part.

any advice????

hidef, I just looked it up and came up with the same question you did. I do know that back in those yrs the CV's went to a single pack but was unaware of any superceding. Best thing to do is call BRP customer service.

Look on the port side stern bracket. Let us know what you find.

Re: 1989 Johnon Power Pack replacement???

BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) bought OMC after it went bankrupt in 2000/2001. They switched to a single pack in 1988. To retro fit the 89 with two packs would have required an older stator. Now it is possible the OP has an 89 engine with an 87 or older power head.

Re: 1989 Johnon Power Pack replacement???

alright, so i talked to Evinrude today. they said its an '87. i got the right parts ordered and the place i got the wrong part is giving me a full refund, so hopefully everything will be ok. i just hope its the power packs that are giving me the problems. the motor cranks and runs great for 30 or so seconds, and then just shuts off. the local outboard motor repair shop told me to start with the power packs, and like i said earlier, both were split on the back side. so maybe that will fix me up. i really appreciate all your help! this is a great site for idiots like me that want to tinker with it, rather than pay $70+/hr.

Thank You ! !
