Hey my 110 Johnson has been acting up on me. Last weekend I took it out, got in the water and it would not stay running for more then 5-8 seconds tops. I was using starter fluid just to keep it running somewhat. I had it out the weekend before and everything seemed fine. But everytime I start it I have to use a shot or two of starter fluid and that doesnt seem right, before I bought it, about a month ago, it wasnt ran for 2 years besides the time we started it at the time of purchase. I have not changed the plugs in it nor taken the carb apart and cleaned it. What could be wrong with it?

Another thing is that when I run the motor on muffs or in the lake, when i get it out of the water and all the water drains from the lower unit, there seems to be some lower unit oil coming out of one of the water outlet cooling holes. Are the gaskets inside the lower unit shot? What else could it be?

Re: 1989 Johnson 110.

the oil is probably unburnt fuel, common with 2 strokes. NEVER spray anything into a 2 stroke carb, other than premixed fuel/oil. starter fluid, burns to hot, easy way to burn a hole in a piston, and it also strips all lubricant of the internal parts.

get some champion QL77JC4 spark plugs, and gap them at .030.

these motor require regular maintainance.

you also need to service the water pump before you burn up the engine.

why would i need to service the water pump, it has a healthy water stream. Also, how do i get it started w/o starting fluid and it has a tough time starting?
