Hello everyone,

I bought a boat 1 year ago and have been restoring it top to bottom. We started the motor for the first time yesterday, started it 3 times. First 2 times it sounded great, 3rd time and this afternoon, it sounded like it was starved for gas as it would bog but not die.

We've replaced the spark plugs, fuel filter, the fuel, envinrude/johnson synthetic oil.

Any ideas of things I should check ?

Thanks!

Welcome to iboats Jay!

Fuel is fresh and the fuel can vented?

When you start it and it sounds like it's starved, push in on the choke and see if it picks up.....or....

Get a spray bottle and put some premix fuel in it. Start the engine. If it sounds starved, shoot some premix down the carb throats. If the engine picks up, your probably in need of a carb over haul. If the engine has been setting idle for a while....would be a good idea to do anyways.

Also check for any fuel lines that have become hard with time. Replace these...they tend to lose their grip and can suck air.
If your not sure of what has been done maint wise to it, get a compression and spark reading on each cylinder.

A water pump and t-stats would also make a well rounded job.

EDIT: By the by...if your running the VRO pump, look at it and see how wires is in the harness. If it's the newer type, it'll have four wires.

OBJ,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I forgot to mention that we also replaced the water pump. I have a friend that was in mechanics for a while and thats the first thing he recomended. I did use the choke to start the engine.

Im just puzzled as to why the motor would sound so great after sitting for 2 years (after a few attempts to start it) and then sound like its having trouble.

I was hopping not to do some carb work, but if you think its necessary i wont waste any time. Should I yank them out myself and bring them to a marina ? Im not very mechanicly inclined, but im sure I could handle removing 2 carbs.

I am using the VRO system, on recomendation from a marina, because I handent started the motor in a while, they recomended I mix my gas with oil along with the VRO system to make sure the VRO is in working order.

Come to think of it, is it possible that theres just too much oil going to the motor ?

I await your experience and wisdom! Thanks again!

<Saluts Vice Admiral>

Jay....if the engine has set for a good while, there is a good chance that varnish has formed in the fuel bowls. Running it a couple times can break the varnish lose and plug up the jets.

I would also recommend a service manual. OEM's are preferred because they give you specific info about your particular engine. Generics are good in some applications but it's worth the money to get the OEM. iboats sells the generics...see the bottom of the page. If you would prefer the OEM, search for Ken Cook Co. or Marine.com. Both have reprints of the original service and parts manual.

From the looks of the work your doing, your going to have one nice toon there.... :)
