Hi,

When I first begin to throttle up the motor is sluggish and sometimes doesn't propel the boat at all. It's strange because it looks as if the prop is spinning because I can see the bubbling action at the prop. After throttling down and back up a few times the problem goes away and the motor is good for the rest of the day. A friend said that it is a spun prop. But if that is the case why would it be fine after it was warmed up. Seems to me a spun prop would be a ongoing problem. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Mark the prop and hub, go for a spin and see if it is still in the same position afterward. If it moved it is spun.

Re: 1989 Johnson 120

the hub may be heating up due to the friction, and then holding.
Spun prop

Propeller: shear pin, is the also known as the drive pin. the propeller is made of and inner case and outer case, with the blades, between them is a pressed in rubber bushing. that holds the two parts of the prop together.

a SPUN HUB is when the bushing get worn, and fails. the inner will spin, with the prop shaft, but the outer will not spin, due to the bad bushing.

take a permanet marker (sharpie) and draw a line across your hub. run the motor, then check the line, most likely it is not aligned anymore

Thank you for the advise. I'll mark the prop and take it for a spin on Friday. I'll let you know what happens...
