so this problem is driving me nuts. had no spark to one bank. replaced power pack, now had spark but no power. i realize prob needs cleaning or carb kit. now have no spark to that bank again. one time you fire it up and it backfires and the next time it doesn't. sure hope this brand new powerpack isn't a dud. i've had it on for about a year but haven't had the time to test and check.this has been hounding me for about 2 yrs now

After going thru my motor part by part(still am), I would do the things you know are wrong first. Even if it doesn't fix your immediate problem. Your carbs MUST run properly or your motor won't run well at all. Spark, no spark, occational spark.... it all doesn't matter if your carb don't get fuel to the motor correctly. As for the spark issue, do the electrical tests stated in your manual for the power pack. If that's ok go to your timer base and run electrical tests for that. I believe your power pack gets a reference signal from timer base. Maybe there is a short... test it. One wire at a time....

I am not an outboard mechanic but I am no stranger to working on v8's. I have an 85 150 johnson. I have 2 powerpacks and each one is connected to the timer base. If the timer base is bad or intermittent, your powerpack won't work. Hopefully it's something simple and nothing as major as that. Good luck

If the engine backfires after replacing a pack, you may have misconnected two of the coil leads. The pack leads are color coded for each coil. It is easy to switch two wires. The engine will usually run, but you'll get backfiring.
