Hello all - I am considering buying a 23 ft boat with a 200 HP Johnson Outboard. Can anyone tell me if these are solid motors? Any problems I should look out for? It runs fine and compression test is 95 to 99 on all 6. Has 500 hours since new mostly in the salt, but maintained and cleaned regularly. Any help would be appreciated

take it for a run up the river..if it runs good through out all rpm ranges, sounds like you are good to go..I would install new water pump impeller, change gear case oil,(look for water in oil), clean carbs and check carb gaskets, check fuel lines, replace any filters, and a new set of champion plugs for that engine. And do a decard, how to in the secret files top of forum.

As posted if salt or brackish water usage check really good, its fair on fuel usage other than that pretty good motor.

Thanks for the feedback - Seems to run good! - took it out for a test yesterday and it runs well... The previous owner bypassed the oil injection system and is mixing the gas - What is the optimum mix for this engine? What kind of oil should I use?

BTW - to Lake Racer, I'm not sure if it is a looper or crossflow? How do I tell? It says Tracker on the engine cover

post model #...50:1 oil mix. Any TCW3 oil. I use Pennzoil from Wal-mart about $20 a gallon I think. Get a measuring bottle like this one

And remember it never hurts to add a couple of extra ounces per 10 gallons. I do. I always mix oil while putting gas in so I will never forget. Best if you know about how much fuel you will add and add oil first so it mixes best.

That's easy - there are no 200HP crossflows in 1989. The motor is a big bore looper and a torque monster. It's a little hungry, but very powerful.

Re: 1989 Johnson 200 outboard - any good?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. One more question... what is the acceptable compression on this 1989 Johnson 200 looper? Did another compression test this morning while changing plugs... top cylinders on both sides are 88... the other 4 cyclinders are right at 90... anyreason for the top 2 being lower? is this overall acceptable?

OK guys - Working on this engine today, previous owner removed the oil tank and was mixing fuel... still has VRO pump on the enigne.... Is this OK will it work as it should without oil? should I change the pump to manual mix?

That's fine, and you can keep the gasoline side of those pumps working a long time with repair kits. Keep mixing all gasoline with TC-W3 oil at 50:1.

If you should use that engine for high performance, consider using a richer fuel/oil mixture than 50:1.

Re: 1989 Johnson 200 outboard - any good?

i just pulled one of these off my 20' Aquasport. Even with only 5 cylinders with compression, it pushed my deep v hull up to 40mph. I also ran it on only 5 cylinders for over a year. Well built. The only major issues i had with this motor was with the flywheel. the magnets came off and made a mess of the stator/electrical system once. be careful with that.

other than that, it liked to use fuel, but it was a dependable, powerful motor.

I would order;
rebuild kits for the carbs.
A bunch of nylon drain screw seals ( for the prop gearbox drains), one use.
Water pump impellor.
.... unless the PO just did all the above.

Get the service manual at link $45, HAVE A GOOD READ.:)
www.outboardbooks.com

Compression is good, mine is around 85psi, more important is they are within 10% of each other.
CArry a spare gallon of oil onboard.

Order your parts right here on iBoats.!
