I have a 1989 70 hp Johnson that i have to use the manual choke at the solenoid to fog/choke...it starts right up this way...but if i put the red choke lever in the normal position (parallel with the solenoid body) it wont get fuel/start does anyone know what usually happens to the solenoid..? Can i clean, or rebuild the solenoid or am i going to have to replace the whole solenoid? I don't want to sound cheap but $170 is a lot lately. Thanks in advance to any help here.

With the red lever in the auto position does the solenoid click when you try to prime it with the key? Remove the hose that goes to the carbs and see if any fuel comes out of the hose when you prime it with the key. The parts breakdown shows all the repair parts to rebuild the solenoid.

I'll give that a try tomorrow. I plan on replacing the key switch as well. Probably do that first....(starts with a screwdriver presently....from previous owner) As of now i get nothing with the key when i push it in...no sound/click...nothing. Seeing as how I need to replace the key switch anyway....(maybe it's the culprit??) i figure i'll do that first then on to the solenoid. When i manually choke ..ie. spin the red lever by hand... i hear the fuel spray and then a click. Then she fires right up.

If I replace the key switch and i still get nothing from the solenoid...what could this mean? Is it definitely the solenoid needing rebuild/replaced? I found one on ebay for $65...not bad ...saves over $100.

IF you have voltage at the solenoid when you push in the key, and no click or fuel out of the lines to the carb, then you will need to replace the solenoid.
NOTE: Make sure the ground to the solenoid is clean and passes voltage.

Re: 1989 Johnson 70 choke solenoid issues

Okay, I switched out the key switch and i get 11.46 V @ the solenoid when the key is pressed for choke. Do I buy the little internal parts to repair or just go ahead and replace the whole solenoid? Im thinking a replacement is most likely. I guess the solenoids go bad for whatever reason like on my old Ford trucks:confused: . Any more advice would be much appreciated. Anyway, thanks for the help.
