Hey guys.
I have a 1989 15 hp mariner that I'm attempting to repair the recoil on and It has me stumped! My father was using the motor and pulled the recoil out and it got stuck. I took the recoil apart and re-tensioned the pull rope and installed everything back together.

The issue I'm having is I cannot figure out what engages the recoil onto the flywheel. Motors I have worked on in the past usually used a dog and spring system to engage and release the flywheel. This model seems to have no connection between the two and when I pull the installed recoil I get nothing. The recoil just seems to ride on top of the flywheel shaft....

I cant help but think I'm missing something very obvious here! Pics below for reference! Thanks for any help.

There is a special bearing in the recoil.------Grabs when you pull the recoil.-----Does nothing when motor is running.

Makes sense but I still cant picture how that bearing would work! What would you suggest for this problem? Replace the bearing, or clean the bearing and lube?

Did you assemble the recoil correctly. We are not there to do it for you, maybe take it to a dealer.

I realize your not here to do it for me, that's why I'm here on this forum asking for help. The recoil is assembled properly, it does its just it just will not grab on the shaft. Brought it to the dealer first and they had no clue how it works, which is the reason why I've turned to you guys. I'm assuming the bearing is BO and needs to be replaced but there is only a part number for the housing so I'm assuming I need to order the entire piece. I was hoping someone with somenknowedlge of these recoils could tell me exactly how it works or s procedure for cleaning/repairing the bearing

Take the nut off the flywheel.-----Now play with that post in the recoil.-----You should be able to spin it one way but not the other.-----A dealer that does not know about this recoil ?-----Same set up was used on some motors in the late 1930's so it is not new technology !------Perhaps ----google ----roller clutch or one way bearing------ to see how common this unit is.
