I have a 1989 maxum cuddy cabin, with a 125 h.p. Force outboard. Have had it for about three years now. Converted it to a bowrider a couple years ago. Decided to do another restore and make it a center console, which is the process I am in now.
The boat was purchased new by my inlaws in 89. It sat in the water for about the first three years, after that it sat on the trailer in there yard under a acorn tree. Needless to say it had it's share of barnicles, as well as acorns. The motor has little hours on it. One day I was asked if I would like to have it and I said yes. New tires and a little grease on the wheel bearings and the boat was on the road, mildew and all. Got some pretty interesting looks on the way home.

What was involved in removing the floor? I've got a 1990 21' Maxum with soft floor supports and wonder about the stringers. Floor is solid, so I'd like to pull it out, fix problems underneath and put it back in place. Also has a soft transom, but that seems easy now that I've read to use a chainsaw to grind out the core.

Check this out...

There are many deck replacement projects going on this forum as I type... You can use the search tool. Basically just cutting out the bad area... More often than not, this leads to finding rotten stringers and other issues...

So in your experience how is the deck attached to the sides of the boat? A layer of glass over top of a fillet? Do you just grind thru the glass with a ???? Or do you cut the wood near the edge? I haven't even pulled up the carpet yet, just trying to plan ahead.

Re: 1989 maxum cuddy cabin

My 1989 Maxum Cuddy deck was completely rotten, once I removed the two inches or so of mulched pinestraw that had built up on the deck over the years, I suited up in my hooded desposible suit, gloves, respirator and goggles and set my skill saw to about 5/8" depth and cut around the deck as best as I could checking frequently to be sure I wasn't cutting into or thru the hull of the boat.
After that I pretty much used visegrip pliers to remove the fiberglass along the sides of the hull and touched up with my 4" grinder.

That's helpful, thanks. Did you find any screws thru the deck into the stringers? Or does it just float on the stringers and is glassed to the hull at the edges?

It's been five or so years ago now and I didn't take pictures of that part of the project so I can't be sure if there were screws in the deck or if the deck was just glued to the stringers. Sorry!

These picture's might help you some, this is pretty much how the layout looked as a cuddy cabin. But remember my deck had been raised four inches in these photo's and the seat boxes had been cut down narrow like you see them on each side of the hull.

Here's a picture of the boat new and a picture of the under deck framing, etc.

Did some research and found according to the brochure that came with my boat that the deck of the boat is bonded in place.
