My project boat is finished and I plan to take it out for a spin. The motor was not running when I purchased it. I switched out the stator and trigger and it started up but ran bad, idled rough and high with backfiring. I have a manual which explains the link and sync procedure. I am a backyard maniac(mechanic). I played with the idle and timing screws and have accomplished a nice idle . I did not spec all of the adjustments nor have I had the chance to run above 2000 RPM . So if this thing opens up and runs well would I be reckless to assume all is well?

You stand a good chance of grenading a piston if you messed with max advance. Get a manual from the library or order one from iboats, then follow the procedures. Even a seasoned Merc mechanic would never do a sync and link by educated guesswork. Two degrees in the wrong direction will destroy a piston in a few minutes of full throttle.

Get it done right. If that timing is off, it will run great until ya melt a piston.. been there, done that-had the motor set for premium gas by the rebuilder, and I was running regular, and after a rebuild, had to do it all over again.

If you do it by the book I have a seloc manual or the way laddies does it can we assume that we should not have any problems i want to rebuild my carbs and have a timing light and have some experience with motors if i go by the book and set things to the book should i be ok don't wanna burn a piston first time out im running a 1970 115 merc runs ok now some gas dripping from bottom carb idiling surges a lil bit but when running wot sounds great so i was thinking rebuild carbs new plugs a linc an sync and i should be good to go any other suggestions on what i should do

Thanks WillyB and Scaaty, I knew it may not be a real good thing to do but am anxious to put the boat in the water for a test run. Watched the super bowl instead yesterday while the weather was perfect . I have a Seloc manual and have gone over the linc and sync pages. They are a bit confusing as they seem to call the same adjustment screws by two different names. Also I purchased a dial indicater but it is in millimeters, not inches as the specs are given in the manual. Any one know how many millimeters = .554" ?
