I have a 1989 28 hp Johnson that has the factory controls(Single lever throttle/shifter). The other outboard is a 1969 Evinrude 33hp with seperate shift and throttle levers and the ignition is seperate from the controls. I want to use the 1989 controls(already in the boat) on the 1969 Evinrude(would look better on my boat because of age-similar to my avatar pic). The shift and throttle work fine(old controls need a new cable), but the key will not start the Evinrude, nor will the kill switch work.

Questions

1. Should this setup work? Or can I somehow make it work?

2. If not can I get a key for the old setup as it does not have one? Or do I need a new switch?

Thanks for the help on my off season project. The Evinrude needs other attention(Awakening a sleeping outboard) before being used.

You should be able to make the keyswitch work. The two black wires should go to the two 'M' terminals previously having black & black/yellow stripe terminals. The purple/white stripe from the 33hp goes to the 'C' terminal previously having a yellow/black stripe wire going to it. The white wire goes to the 'S' terminal which previously also had a white wire on it. If there's a remaining red or red/purple stripe wire, that gets fused (20 amps) from the battery.

Make sure neither of the 'M' terminals connect to ground anywhere.
