Hello again

I am having my 1989 OMC King Cobra rebuilt since I bent the shaft last week.

While we are in there I decided to possibly replace my worn gears. I found a set for around $500. There won't be any more labor so it seemed like a good idea to just do it.

I found a gear set for sale that appears to match my gears. I am comparing the pictures and they look identical, EXCEPT they are advertised as counter rotation.

Would they look different? Maybe the seller is confused? Any advice would be appreciated.

Here are the pictures

Howdy,

too bad you don't live in the NW.....I have a LOT of 460 KC "stuff"

Do NOT put opposite rotation gears in that thing and run them. They WILL fail very quickly.

Most drives that are spec'ed as "reverse" or "left hand" rotation (except Bravo's that can be run in either direction) cannot be run the "other" direction at full power for very long.

I wouldn't take a chance with the King Cobra since the parts supply is rapidly running out and the parts left are multiplying in price.

Re: 1989 OMC King Cobra "Counter Rotation"

the original "King Cobra" was a cone clutch shift.
for a few years in the late 80's the "King" was badged on a sliding clutch lower.
the gear set for counter rotation is completely different than standard(left hand) rotation.
but first make sure which king you actually have.
on OMC, and most other dog shift style units, the aft gear also takes the thrust load in a counter rotation unit.
thats why the gear, bearing and bearing carriers are different.

Wouldn't that make the "original" King Cobra, the 1987 model year? (like the one I have sitting on the floor)

Mine is a sliding (dog) clutch model, holds 108oz of oil, is CALLED "King Cobra" and only went behind the 460 for 1987/88/89.

The first cone clutch model was the 1990 model (big block only.....the smaller ones didn't get the "cones" until a few years later presumably (maybe?) because they wanted to "use up" all the "dogs" they had on hand.
