Hey 1stboat..
No worries, WELCOME ABOARD!
I dont know that model, but..

I am unsure if a 3.0 would seriously pull that many skiers..Maybe kids..lol
There is a whole section on skiers here, there may be info there on what a 3.0 can do

I think the MD 170 is an outboard and the MD 171 was an Inboard/outboard.

This is not true. This forum is for all Starcraft branded boats. It just happens that about 95% of us have aluminum Starcrafts.

A 3.0 will not pull 4 skiers. It will struggle with a single larger adult on a single ski if there's a decent passenger load in the boat. It's a rock solid motor though but not a powerhouse. If watersports are you primary activity, opt for a 4.3 V6 or larger.

Hey 1stboat, welcome to the Starcraft club for all models, glass or tin. As said earlier most of us are tin-heads by choice but we don't put our nose up a the glass crowd. In fact some of us also, heaven forbid, have a glasser in the closet. Heck, a boat is a boat.

Now, I'm not at all familiar with the Medalist series but you are asking about ski performance. I would head over to the Wakeboarding/Skiing side and ask there. A 3.0 might be a little short on power for more than one on a rope.

First and foremost, whatever you end up with have safe fun with it.

Re: 1989 starcraft medalist 1701

I believe the Medalist is similar to an earlier model called the American.

Starcraft made some good glass rigs, and even had some famous hull designers working with them back in the day. Chinewalker knows all the details, as he has restored two American hulls now, and did one heckuva job at that.:)

Check out some of the brochures linked in my signature, they include fiberglass models in certain years. We do not have an '89 brochure, but the Medalist might have been built prior to that year also.

Welcome aboard 1stboat:D

3.0 is 135hp

hits ski speed at 3000rpm, and on a 17" tops at 36mph

I had that engine on a 17' about 12 years ago, handled 2 adult skiers(not slalom) or 3 kids easily.
