Hello,

I checked out my overheat system on my boat. I think it is working fine. What I did is ground out each cylinder bank and the alarm in the remote control went off at each side. I also ran my motor on the water muffs for about 10 minutes and the alarm never went off. In fact it has never went off. I can also lay my fingers on the motor and I can leave it there at least 3 to 4 seconds before I have to remove them. Does this sound like my motor is not overheating to you guys? Thanks I can't wait to go boating. I believe I will take her out next weekend it is suppose to be around 80 degrees.

That is the correct test for the horn. It does not confirm that the senders are good, though.

With two senders, it would be really surprising to have both go bad at the same time, plus you have the tell-tale so you will know if the water pump is working.

You have two 143 degree thermostats in the engine, one for each half of the block. When at normal operatine temps, you should be able to lay your hand anywhere on the engine block for 30 seconds. If you can only touch it for 3-4 seconds, it may be too hot. How long since the impeller was replaced?

Running the engine on muffs isn't a good way to test the cooling system. Even with a bad waterpump the residual pressure from the garden hose can circulate enough water cool the engine.

Everyone,

I changed the water pump out last year 2005 and as soon as the engine kicks over and runs the tale tale system instantly shoots out water at a good clip. But I didn't know that testing on the water muffs isn't a good test for the cooling system either. I will test that when I hopefully put her in the water for the first time next weekend. It is too cold today with temps hovering around 50 degrees. Next weeekend it is suppose to be in the upper 70's to near 80 degrees.

I forgot to add I also changed out both thermostats with a Sierra thermostat kit that comes with the 2 springs,2 rubber grommets, those 2 white plastic things and gaskets.

When you determine if everything is , ok . Why not, install a temp guage? Then you'll have a much better way, to monitor your engine temp. I also like to have a water pressure guage. I dont have to keep turning around, to see **** stream.
Good-Luck,
KYHunter

Laying hands on motors has never worked for me.Maybe because of the temp swings in New England. And we are only looking at 20 degrees between normal and overheat.

The crayons work well (thermo sticks). And I also use a pyromometer.Just bought a Sears point and aim temp unit, but haven't used it much yet.

DHP
