Hello guys,

I have a question. Today I went out to Kaskaskia River and took the boat out today. I previously had a problem a week ago with starting so I replaced the solenoid. Today I went to start my outbaord after pulling someone on a tube and it would not start I only had a tapping noise when I simultaneously turned the key so I took the engine cover off and the starter gear was hung up in the flywheel so my buddy had to tap the starter gear back down. The gear teeth on the starter motor is pretty worn out rounded looking not v looking but the flywheel looks brand new no wearing of it's gear teeth it has a pefect v on the end of it's teeth. Should I buy a new starter? After we got the starter motor un binded I immediately went to turn the flywheel by hand and it turned fine for me I don't think I have a seizing going on because I pulled tubes and skiers the rest of the day and didn't have a problem after this problem occured. It bound up only once.

Just put in a new Bendix gear, Bubba. That's all you need.

Do this.

1. Unhook the battery.

2. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable from the side of the engine block.

3. Clean that connection-thoroughly.

4. Reinstall.

5. Hook up battery.

I'll bet, that is your problem. That series of engines was notorious for that connection getting fouled. It will act just like a bad or dragging starter. Been there.

If the starter pinion gears are that bad, do what JB said. However, if you do not clean up the connections, it will happen again.

I was able to get a good look at my starter. I ran the starter pinion gear up and down the starter shaft and noticed some fine dirt particles on the shaft so I took some Sea Foam Deep Creep lubricant and cleaner in the spray can and lubed that shaft pretty good and continued running that gear up and down until all those dirt particles was gone. I also tookDJ advice and took apart that ground underneath the starter motor bolted against the engine block and there was zero corrosion on it it looked brand sprankin new but I did notice that the shaft that that ground was attached to was somewhat loose so I tightened her down after I took it apart. I am hoping that fixed my problem especially the combination of the lube and the slightly loose ground. We shall see in time.
