" i have to choke it and hold it wide open an go in gear quick."
Any ideas"

yeh stop doing THAT:D

theres no load on a hose so one or two dead cylinders get dragged along for the ride.
Put it in the water and the drag of the dead holes stop it from running.

So you just need to find out if its fuel (carbs)
or a no spark situation.

Easiest way is to eliminate the spark problem.
Go to an auto store and get a GAP tester for less than $10.
Should jump at least 3/8th inch and be blue not yellow or gold.

Due to the good work you already did its probably going to be missing spark or weak yellow. Find the bad one and swap a good coil with the dead one, if the problem follows the coil you got it.

Examine any coil removed for cracks, clean all coil coil grounds til shiny new metal, test plug wires with a meter, just look for identical or similar readings.
It ain't nasa but we ain't rocket scientists either.:p

you set your idle speed on muffs, you cannot expect it to run in the water, on muffs there is not any back pressure on the exhaust. set idle faster on muffs, then fine tune the in the water, with the motor in gear. that is where it has to idle.
