I am looking at a boat that has a 1990 175 V-6 Johnson. Took it for a ride, plenty of power, smooth increase in rpm, plenty of water out pee hole. Forward/reverse worked fine, as did T/T. Will probably do a compression check before I buy it.
Any advice concerning this engine? Anything I should look out for, anything in particular I should check? Have heard these engines are fond of fuel. True?

Re: 1990 175 advice

I have a 91 150 and yes it is fuel hungry. If you are on a small to medeum lake and stay out of the throttle, cruise below 4k rpm it's not too bad. Open it up and you can watch the gas gauge go down.
Check compression is a must. I found out the hard way. My rebuilt one get's about 100 to 110 psi. Good Luck.
