I have a 1990, 20 HP (thru exhaust) 3blade 10x13. I removed the prop to check the shaft and when reinstalling, the nut doesn't seem to be tightening. I'm already past the cotter pin hole and could still tighten more. I've read that the nut should be torqued to 10 ft lbs. Is this correct? It seems that I may have gone to far now. Thank you in advance for any info you can give me.

Welcome,
What brand of motor?
Perhaps the thrust washer has fallen off.Sometimes they stick to the prop and fall out after removal.

I'm stumped. You understand the thrust washer goes under the prop and there is a washer under the nut And a cotter pin.
Sometimes there is a tab washer under the nut instead of using a cotter pin.

Yes, I have the thrust washer under the prop and a washer on top/under the nut and a cotter pin. I looked at again today and found out the washer under the nut was collapsing as I tightened it. It's made out of some sort of fibrous material. Is that normal?

The few props I've done i never saw a fiber washer under the nut.
I haven't changed that many props and have never torqued them I just made sure the prop was seated and the nut tight.
Sometimes I would go back and check after a few trips out.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to take it to the lake and give it a try then check it often. I turned the washer over and just snugged up the nut and put in a new cotter pin. That should be enough seeing that it has a spline on the shaft and hub.
