Stalling when going into neutral= bad shift switch and bracket.

clanton- is that the name of that part, can't find it in my original repair manual. talked to a mech. he said spray the switch with a penetrating oil it has seemed to help quite a bit. thanks

shift interrupt switch, the plunger gets sticky due to oil, dirt and gum.

Re: 1990 225 evinrude stalling problem

I have the same problem on a 1997 Evinrude 225. I replaced the switch but the problem persists. The purpose of the switch is to cut out 3 of the cylinders in neutral so that you will go into the next gear with less of a bump. In my case I suspect that ALL of the cylinders are cutting out just for a second and the motor dies. You can bypass the switch and shift with all the cylinders. Just unclip the switch from it's bracket and try shifting.

thanks for the reply, i took the switch out and cleaned it, shifted fine for a while then it started again. the switch does not seem to sit very tightly in the bracket, seems loose, also i think the idle is to low can i adjust the idle in the drive way or should this be done on the water?
