Re: 1990 225 evinrude

I have a Frankenstien Motor that size. The mid sect and lower unit is a 1986, the block is a 1991, and the electrical system is a 1987. The hood and paint job is a 1987. So does this count?

that motor and its basic design has been around since 1986 and with some changes internally stayed in production until 2001 when OMC folded. The ignition and cu. inches were changed in '88 and in '93 received a closed deck cylinder design. There are a lot of them out there and they are good candidates for hopping up.

They also help with hopping up a late model Bayliner Trophy Walkaround. I love passing four stoke 200 Yamahas in Lake Erie! Nothing like a big bore Looper that runs great at full throttle. Squeeking out another 2 miles ahour with trimming the motor is great.

Ran it today like I was in a Miami Vice Show from back in the day. Broke the kicker hold up bar from "traving Fast and safely" across the lake. I love that bit of air you get by leaping a 4000 lbs fishing machine off a swell. I can see why Bass guys love running fast...

These motor are Raw power. Love Em!

I use a normal automotive style engine lift. They sell them pretty cheap at Harbour freight. You will also need a engine stand. If you watch thier sales fliers you will be able to get both these items for 50% off.

thanks for the reply chief, i think i will rent the lift and build the stand. have a question for you since you have the same engine (almost) i noticed after decarbing the engine and putting in new plugs the new plugs look oil fouled to me. what should the plug look like if the engine is running proper. thanks again

I'll post tomrrow a pic of mine. I don't know if they are what they are supposed to look like but hey I can't can not complain about my performance. They are brownish with the black around the tips.

If you have the hard starting I would do a linc and sinc right off the bat. Make sure your shutters/butterflies are clossing perfectly. It you tap on them and you hear them hitting then they are not good enough. After that I would check the orfices in your throttle plate for clogging. Common problem with these motors.

Mine normally take two spins to get going. So It sounds like you got it. As to idling rough that is the linc and sinc.

Re: 1990 225 evinrude

Well here are the pics you asked for. These plugs are the same plugs I put in when I rebuild/reringed the motor. Never changed them after the break in process. Thes eplugs have a50 hours on them including 10 hours of breaking running XD-50 double mix or 50:1. They look pretty clean to me. I change my plugs every year in the spring though as a regualar maintance item along with the lower unit oil.

I also took a pic of the premixed fuel to give an idea of what I run. I use Evinrude XD-100 oil since the breaking period for premix. You can see in the pic that there is not a whole lot of extra addatives in it. You can see pre much through it like it was virgin gas. I like that because to me it means not alot of build up on the plugs when idling or slow cruising. I must also point out my motor pretty much has two speeds. Off and full throttle. The big lake has been pretty flat this year.

Hope this helps you....
