I just purchaed my first boat , have been around boats for a little while and am machanically inclined. I was looking over the engine and wireing and notice that the red wire coming out of my rectifier has its insulation melted off. should i replace or can i just reinsulate and what would cause that ? have not yet had it running waiting for more money to get gas tank and fuleline (missing).

Re: 1990 25hp evrude rectifier

The rectifier is not required to run the motor, but if it is damaged, it can allow battery voltage to reach charge coils and damage them and sometimes ignition components as well. The indication of voltage running the wrong way is the melted insulation on the red wire.

Rectifiers are most often damaged by reversing of the battery connections or by disconnecting the battery while running, as with loose cables.

It would be a good idea to map the wiring of the rectifier and remove it until your new one arrives.
