We took spare change out last sat to Castaic lake. This was an improvement because we made it to the lake. The previous trip, I was solo and broke a spring and had to limp home (home is about 30 mile away). On Sat, Joe and I spent all morning not finding anything but dinks, the dinks are ok. We have done worse:redface: On the run back to the dock, I was thinking man she is sounding harsh, OK real harsh we were looking at each other and I was backing her down. She had kind of an hammering sound and that is just not good

!
Not good is right she let out a clunk, and it was time to break out the trolly motor. I did not bother to try a re-start. We got towed in and were home by 3pm

. I pulled the plugs , and I tried the starter on Sunday, she went a few degrees. Then top plug looked OK, then bottom one was not so OK. It was rough as if it had been beat up. it looked a little sand blasted. I slept one it with visions of seized pistons hunting me all night. There was also the thought that it sounded like my ATC did when it's bottom end died.
I pulled the head today, not bad. Not too much salt build up, the bolts came out, and did not snap. Life is good. The head and cylinders look good. The top one had a bit of oil running down it. The lower one was dryer, with a few tiny marks here and there, but not bad at all

. It was a lot cleaner. Then I saw it, the top piston had just a bit of carbon on it, but not the lower one, it had a clean ring around it!
That's it, that's the story. Little bits and marks, clean piston with a shinny ring and and a harsh clanky sound. If you try and turn the motor by hand it moves about 90 degrees. There is something bad going on in the bottom end.
On Tue, I will get the power head off, and maybe crack the case for a look.
Also the flywheel sheared the key.
