I have a 1990 40hp Evinrude manual tilt with a tilt assist cylinder. The problem is that it is stuck in one position. The tilt lever moves freely but the cylinder will not operate and the motor will not tilt. Any help you may have to offer will be appreciated.

Re: 1990 40hp Evinrude manual tilt problems

Hi Pwood
These things are a pain. As far as I know the only way to repair this system is to remove it and replace it. The tilt assist is a big expencive part, and they don't last long. Do a search on this board about this problem. I believe there have been several attempts to get around this one. I don't know that anyone has really scored yet. Fortunatly my motor has a jet pump so I don't have to tilt the motor. There are times that it would be nice though. The only other idea is to replace the transome clamp assembly from a donor motor with power tilt or manual tilt.

PWOOD....one place to look for a problem is where the cable from the cylinder connects to the lever. This is a plastic fitting that is pron to breaking. Cheap little part.

If you can get a screwdriver under the stem on the cylinder and pry up, this will release the cylinder and let you tip it up.

Keep us posted and welcome to the forums.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to get the cylinder free by tapping on the valve while working the handle. Since then it won't go back in the lock position. I guess I'll try to find a manual before I go any further. Thanks again for the replies.
