On the port side of the engine (cowel off) there is a little red lever, I know it has to do with fuel delivery? What the heck is it for? It is not in my manuel and my local dealer looks at me like I have two heads. Any Help??

It is indeed the Manual Primer Lever, just in case the electric primer selonoid fails or your battery is dead and you have to pull start it. When the lever is turned about 90*, is allows you to pump gas straight through to the cylinders using the primer bulb for cold starting. Inline with the selenoid body is normal operating position...

Hey Rick....just a brain hemorage here.....with the amount of questions we get on the primer solenoid manual lever positions, could you put that pic in the FAQ's sort of as a reference pic? Pic's speak louder than words and would be a good FAQ.

So for normal opperations should the lever be point as far to the front of the motor as possible, straight up or towards the back of the motor?

Normal 'run'and key operation position is just as it is in the pic that Rick posted. For manual open position the lever opens counterclockwise about 120 degrees or perpendicular to the body of the solenoid.

I will post a picture tomorrow but mine if I'm not mistaken is all the way forward. If that is the case could this make the motor burn more fuel? I have the same motor as the first poster of this message only an 86 mod and its drinking fuel like John Daly drinks Miller.

If it's in the open position ,it will most definately drink fuel like a longshoreman on R&R.Not to mention, sluggish at slow speeds. If the primer valve is open ,the fuel primer bulb will not pump up firm before starting.Or anytime for that matter.

The easiest way to remember the red lever position, is to turn it clockwise until it stops, just like an ordinary valve.

I am sorry to have asked what now seems to be such a dumb question LOL Heres a funny one for you .......I had a problem with this engine loading up, (DUH the manuel choke was on) The repair shop told me that I had a bad carb! This outboard ran great last year and when I went to start it this year I must have bumped it? I guess it is time to find a new shop!!! Well I have to say that I have had great luck on this forum and easily have saved hundreds of dollers. Thanks to all of you for your expert and prompt help. Funny hting is the outboard runs great now thanks to you guys!!!!! Happy Fishing and safe Boating
