1990 48 HP SPL ,No reverse

I need help I have a 1990 48 HP Evinrude spl and reverse is not engaging it jus grinds.
I seen on U Tube that it could be in he shifter control ,a worn part .
Any help would be appreciated.

If you have a control box it could just be out of adjustment.

Thank you , that's what I been reading . A part is worn out not allowing the to go in reverse. Part # 386524

The adjustment is back at the motor. You have two cables, one is for throttle and one is for shifting. It might not be adjusted so that it doesn't go back far enough to make it go in reverse. You can remove it, shift it by hand, see if it works and then adjust the cable to it's proper location.
