1990 5.0 omc quits when put into reverse

My 1990 Donzi with a 5.0 omc quits when it goes into reverse... ??

I don't know much about the Cobras, but what might help the other guys help you: does it stutter and die like it's overloaded or choking? Or does it slam to a stop?

only in reverse? Im thinking the shift interrupter switch is out of alignment.

It stutters bobbles and dies out.... I have adjusted the idle and it seems to have fixed the problem...'idle is at 900-1000. Is this proper

nope idle is about 600 to 800 rpm id check the timing also. the timing would make it stutter, lower the idle and make it prone to dying out.

You can easily get the ESA out of the equation. Just unplug it and see if it still stalls going into reverse. You may have to turn the engine off to get it out of gear though so do this test where you are away from other boats and docks.
