On my carb, i have no air breather filter assembly. The carb is exposed and would likely pick up trash while running. I have noticed some screw ports on the front of the carb and it looks like a breather unit goes there. When i purchased the motor (USED) it did not have one. Does anyone know if there is supposed to be one there? and if so were could i find one, or maybe build one to fit the carb.
Thanks ....jas....

i dont have a filter either and dont think it ever had one. i'm cleaning mine and keeping it really clean in the future so nothing is there to suck up in it. i have foam coming off the housing and it must go in the carb sometimes

I believe something has to cover the front of the carb. Most all other motors i have seen have some kind of air filtration going into the carb.
I will look at my seloc manual tonight to see if there even is one. It does not seem right to have a carb open to suck up trash, alot of damage can occur if this happens.

Some of them came with a baffle system, to act as a noise silencer, but not a filter.

I have looked around a bit and cant seem to find anything in reference to this. I owned a 79 Johnson 85 hp javelin that was like this, carbs with no covers, straight air intake into the carbs. It seems this was ment to be, so i will leave it alone if i dont find anything. Kind of scared of trash being picked up though. The inside is pretty clean, but you never know.

I have a '91 50, and for what it's worth, there's not air filter on my breathers. I've never really thought much about it, but I assume it's self-filtering. By that I mean that the with the engine cover on, the only way air comes in the engine housing is through the little hole in the bottom of the housing. (The one that fuel drains out of when your carb clogs and squirts fuel into the housing  ) With this arrangement, the air flow to the breather is upward and very slow, so any large particulates would settle out before reaching the breather.

But I'm not an expert...

I guess that the way its supposed to be. I will leave it alone. I had my bowl off the carb come off during operation last week...close call....had fuel fill the inside of the motor then started seeping out the cowling....caught fire on the outside....put out....heart attack....opened cover...no damage at all...cleaned up...sopped up fuel, put bowl back on...fired up one start...always be sure to have bowl screw tight....vibration...

I read somewhere that this is normal. The logic is there's not a big dust and dirt problem over water like there is on land.
