Motor running great, all is well except, While ay high rpm, nearly full throttle the motor slips out of gear.
I have adjusted linkage under cowling, and linkage on side of motor going to lower unit. Motor shifts good from standstill, foward and reverse.
Motor runs well slowly increasing speed to 80% then 90% then....."wing"...jumps out of gear....
Bring throttle down, goes right back in gear.
I have tried to adjust this mor than once and still at high rpms it jumps out of gear.
Friend of mine mentioned shift dog turn around?
Lower unit drop, etc etc....looks like trouble..
Any advise?

Thanks....petey

Re: 1990 50HP FORCE SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR

Check for a spun prop first. Draw a line on the propeller and the propeller nut. After motor slips check to see if the line is still straight. I have read threads about 50 HP force props getting spun due to high torque.

If not a spun prop the reversing the clutch dog is a very limited fix. The theory is that reverse gear is not used much so the reverse side of the clutch is not worn as much however the forward gear is worn and will wear the other side of the clutch real fast. If you take the lower unit apart it is best to take the forward gear and the cluctch dog to a machine shop and have them reface both parts for you. You can probably find someone to do it for around fifty bucks.

Re: 1990 50HP FORCE SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR

I have had friends look at my prop and try to turn it in gear, with no effect. Just a little play when they start to turn it. If it was a spun prop wouldnt it pop out gear no matter how fast you were going? I think best bet is to start from the bottom, and remove the prop and inspect the splines and hub for wear. The motor runs great now afte all that work. I put inline fuel filter on the fuel line, and replaced bowl screw gaskets, what a difference!!
Thanks for your help Euro!! I use everyones advise as ammunition to local opinion...Jas petey. ;)

Unless your friend is the bionic man he wont be able to test the spun prop. The only way to test it is the way I described or take it to a prop shop. Chances are the dog and forward gear is shot but testing the prop is easy and free.
