1990 9.9 Won't go in forward gear??!!

I have a 1990 9.9 evinrude. Took it for a ride the yesterday, ran sweet. I docked it, got back in an hour later and it wouldn't go in forward gear, unless you held the shift lever forward?? It goes in reverse without any problem. What happened???? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! Hope its not a spendy fix!!

Has the lower unit been off lately? If it has, then suspect that the shift linkage is not connected properly. If it hasn't been off, then try adjusting the shift cable.

i had the prop off, and replaced the lower seals. I did however pull the propshaft, and pulled the gear out (just checking to make sure everything was okay) while I had it apart. I THOUGHT i had everything put back together right. I have had it out 3 other times since then though, and never had an issue?? O boy, what did i do do now???? Nothing is grinding or anything, just will not go in forward gear unless you have constant pressure on the shift lever

I don't recall how the shift linkage goes together on that motor. Is there an access plate on the side, or do you have to drop the lower end a bit to see it? Either way, just check to see if the linkage is in right. It'll be obvious if it's pulled apart.
