Hi there,
Ive got a 90hp Mariner with low compression on my boat right now. I found a different motor in the newspaper this weekend, which is a 90hp Johnson VRO. Now my question is, would my controls line up with the new motor or would I have to change everything ?? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Markus

You would have to change controls and cables.

Welcome to the forum! :p I believe that you should call the johnson engine guy to see if the engine is to be sold with the controls. That is the easy way. If not, try to get all the wiring harness from the johnson you can grab. Did you test the engine? 1990 is pretty old too

No, this engine is from an individual out of the paper. He took me out on the boat yesterday, and the motor ran excellent. The reason he is getting rid of it is because he is upgrading to 115hp 4-stroke Johnson. Thats why he is keeping all the controls, etc. He showed me the maintenance records from the mechanic, and everything is perfect. Compression checked out at 130lb on all 4 cylinders. He only wants $500 for the motor.
So what am I to do ??

Might check E-Bay for control. Cables can be had easily here on iboats and others. 1990 90 HP is a very good motor if it checks out OK. :)

These side mount controls will work with your motor, assuming you need a side mount control.

web page 2

This is the one I have on my 1991 70 Rude:

web page 2

All controls on E-Bay:

web page

Buy it!!! ;) I paid alot more for my 70 HP!!! Measure your old cables so you know what length to get for the new control and get rid of the VRO, unless it's been updated recently. That can be addressed later.
