Hi,
I am looking at a 1990 Bayliner Capri 2250 bow rider for sale. I talked the guy down to $1,500. It has the 4.3l engine. The interior needs work but the floor is solid....i think i twas replaced. Come with a galvanized trailer with brakes. Boat has a stereo and radio, and even a little sink. Boat has 2 new batteries with a switch. Was sitting all winter....people who bought it are foreign and can't pass the boat license exam so they have to sell it. I cranked it for a while and it turned over...oil pressure went to 40 psi and it idled for about 30 seconds before it shut off. I tried the trim and it wasn't working....they said it was working boefore they parked it, there is a button for the trim on either side of the throttle.

I never owned an inboard before. I was looking at a pontoon but this could be a better cheap boat for this summer. Any suggestions? I am kinda scared but if i get stuck with a bad boat i'm only out 1500 and could part it out and sell the trailer.

I would do a little more homework before jumping on that one....I'm also in the camp of "hey its only 1500" but the problem is you could easily spend another 1500 to get it to a point that you finally realize its a bad boat...now you are talking 3 or 4 thousand which I dont know about you but I would dont want to throw away that kind of money.

why dont you find out if its a bad boat BEFORE you buy it.

At a minumum you need to do a compression test on that motor and make sure you dont have a bad motor....a compression tester is like $40 and one of the easiest thing in the world to do....it was the best investment of $40 I ever made. If you need help finding out how to do a compression test ask on here and we will point you in the right direction.

Next is to take a little oil out of the lower unit and make sure it looks good. Of course it could have been changed since last in the water so that might not be worth much but most sellers arent smart enough to do that and will just think everything is fine.

Better yet take it to the water and try it out.

Not neglecting the whole "transom wrot" issue but thats been preached here so much that you have to be aware of that.

Yeah, i don't want to get over my head on this. My old boat had an outboard so i'm not too knowledgeable on inboards. The motor sounded good when it was running...no knocking or anything. The prop looks like it's bent on one of the fins. It turns freely when i spun it with the motor off. The transom looked ok, the sterndrive unit was all black with some oxidation spots. No stickers or labels. Is there any way to know if the sterndrive is ok, besides checking the oil? Can i put the boat into gear with the engine running while it;s on the trailer?
Thanks,
Dave

PA does have a boating license. I'm not sure how it works if your foreign, but if your born after 1982 you need a license.

If i needed a new stern drive, what would that run? How about the 4.3, if i had to replace that any idea on prices? Looking at a worst case scenerio.

If it's junk do you think i could recover my $1500 reselling it?

Sorry for the questions......Thanks for the help!

if you did not have the water hooked up to it before tou started it.....you just ruined the guys impellar and the boat will overheat no and it could cause motor failure

in canada...... a running 4.3 is a no brainer.....can you deliver?

Ok, i picked up the boat.....I'm having trouble finding info on the 1990 2250 Bayliner Capri BR. Was this a popular boat? Kinda neat, has a little sink and a bunch of cool options. Any one else have one?

Ive got a 91 2050 Capri of that body style with the 4.3. I like it, and don't see too many of that style. I think it was really ahead of its time styling wise. It has been a good boat so far. Paid 4,900 for it, but it was in ridiculously great/all-original shape.

Yeah I love the body style. it's light years ahead of my old 88 maxum. this boat was designed perfect. I cannot even find pics of another one online...weird. The body shape, the side air intakes and the nice platform on the back make it a total package. plus there is hidden storage...i was finding new stuff each day..haha.
Anyone have any links to any brochures or what options were available in the bayliner lineup in 1990?

Thanks!

Well, there is a website devoted to that brand, and there is a guy named Matt there who is a virtual Bayliner encyclopedia...

I have a similar model but it is the cuddy cabin version and is the 2052CK. I also have a borchur with your model in it. Looks nice with the open bow.

I got it in duluth MN, for $3700 + fuel to get it home. It is mint and the only repair I did was a new bilge blower, and a horn. Other than that I just put a new stereo in it. Thats it. Came with 3 covers, has the 5.0L V8, and was kept indoors by the previous 2 owners. I however keep it outside, it is coverd very well. It was never docked by the looks of the outdrive so this is the boats first year being wet slipped. Enjoy your new boat. Keep it dry, bayliners have their name for rotting faster when neglected.

I have the borchue in hard copy, I will try to scan it at work into a pdf.

I just don;t like the hard ride it has in the chop. Bayliners are known to ride hard from the lighter construction and their patented "sequential lift" hull.
