1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 deck rot

Hey everyone,
I've owned this B'liner for the last 3 years. I bought it off the original owner on Craigslist. It has been and continues to be a great boat and I love spending time with family and friends on it. The previous owner had some metal fabrication done as a quick fix for some soft spots around the ski locker. Here's the metal work.

The soft spots were starting to get a little dangerous, in my book, at the end of last year, so I decided to pull up the carpet, and the metal and see what was going on down there.....ugh.

So far with a little bit of cutting, pulling out, the stringers and foam seem solid and dry, but I'm trying to figure out the best method of (hopefully) cutting a patch out of marine grade plywood to fix the rotted areas. I think I'll put the metal back in to reinforce things, but my biggest concern is the spot toward the bow, between the towers that wont have any structure from below to hold it up. I appreciate all comments and advice.

Thanks,
Mark

100% sure just about the whole floor needs to go. Underneath the edges outside the stringers is open cell foam that in all likelyhood needs to come out. In the bow area you need to cut or grind the floor out all the way to the shelf it lies in, then when you put it back we drove plywood up to the front with a padded sledgehammer. Then laminated the edge of ply with biax and epoxy. Why do I feel like I'm repeating myself? (oh yeah I just posted about the same thing for 71 satellite's Bayliner!). Like I told him don't mess with just a patch job as the bond between the floor and the hull is the main structural feature to keep the hull from twisting. I don't think replacing the metal is going to help anything.

'Grits,
Thanks for the response. I agree that is probably the best thing to do, but given that it is July and finally warm around here, I'm much more apt at this point to patch what I can. I think in the fall or next spring that is a project I can take on, but in the mean time I want to be on the water. And I don't think I'll loose any more structural integrity than I've already lost by just patching it.

That boat looks like it's real nice shape otherwise. It would be well worth the effort of really doing the job right and ripping out the entire deck and stringers and rebuilding it. Done properly you'll never have to do it again. I hear ya though that you don't want to be off the water for the rest of the season. If I were you I'd just throw some ply on top of the whole mess, screw it down, and go boating. Do it right in the off season.

Wheeeeeee! It's like looking at my boat before I shredded it!

You can do a patch job to finish out the season, but I'm guessing that foam and the stringers below are just as gone as the floor. And, seeing as bayliner was monumentally stupid about how they assembled this boat, the transom will possibly be rotting as well, since the stringers are directly attached to the transom on a wood-to-wood basis. If water gets in one, it gets to the other by osmosis.

For now, just cut a big piece of 3/4" ply to the rough shape of the missing wood and screw it down, finishing out your season while you can. Just prepare for a winter project. Reading my restoration thread (in progress) will help you get a handle on what is going on under foot.

Thanks guys! Lowkee I've been enjoying your thread, and you are the reason I decided to post to get some more opinions. You and I have the same boat, I've got a little more engine than you though. I can't wait to see where your project takes your boat. I'm sure it will give me a lot of inspiration and ideas for improving mine, but I think we're all in agreement, I'm gonna patch and wait for the off season.

So far, as best as I can tell, the stringers and foam all seem to be in good shape. I had the outdrive replaced last year, and the mechanic made no mention of issues with the transom so I'll keep my eye on it, but I think that it is pretty solid as well. Again thanks for all the input everyone.

Odd request, I know, but seeing as I have never seen my boat in the water, could you make a video of you launching and/or running the boat? I'm curious about things like how high the stern sits in the water (I'd like to make a swim deck at the water line) and how it sits in the water as a whole.

Just pictures of it in the water (at many angles would be great) would suffice.

With that much rot your foam is probably full of water. You have to drill in to it or dig a small hole down to the hull and check for water there. It can look good on top and still be full of water. Patch it up for the season but make sure you have a warm place to work on it once boating season is over.

Lowkee,
Here's what I have for pics of the boat in the water , sorry most of the pictures are from the boat itself. When I'm in the water next I'll do some video of a launch and from the shore.

I also had a little restoration work done. Down 170lbs thanks to some bilge tube rerouting (gastric bypass). That's me driving with my son in 2007, then wakeboarding in 2008:)

Noklu thanks for the tip about digging down through the foam. Now to find that warm place to work in the winter....this is WI for goodness sake. Time to start stockpiling the propane!

hey all, I have a 1990 bayliner 2050 as well, and it seems to me that my boat doesn't run as fast as it should. it has the 3.0 4 cylinder engine. i've only owned the boat for three months and it is in need of a tune up. i see bubbanator has a boat just like mine (only with a rotten deck), how fast boat should this boat run? anyone who has a similar boat, your response is well appreciated thanks, tim

A 20' boat with a 3.0? Yeah that's gonna be a slug. I wouldn't expect any more than 35 TOPS.
