Which one is it 125 or 90 horse power? The reason I ask is I got one pretty cheap and in good shape. The boat had no motor but has a sticker that says 90 MAX. I have a 1987 85 HP Force I am putting on it. I checked the iboats info page on the boat on got this.

Engine Information:
Boat Max HP : 125 hp

This boat may have come with the following or other engines :
(In the interest of safety, never exceed the manufacturer's maximum horsepower rating for your boat.)
90HP

So is it 90 or 125?

My force is long shaft is that the right one?

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

hmmm...interesting. I have the exact same boat Cordell and have though the same thing. My 'boiler plate' say 90hp as well but when I e-mailed Bayliner about the boats rating they said it should be good for 120hp.
It certainly seems beefy enough to hold a bigger motor like a 115-120hp but?
Note: I like the boat a lot and of thought of repowering at some point with a 115hp merc or rude.:D
My two bits.

If the law stop you they will look at the plate in your boat, not the Iboats site. So I would suggest you follow the plate.

Cool, you mind filling me in on a few things...prop pitch...speed:)

And the plate is more like a sticker, could easily be removed. Although it does say coast guard on it. I will have to get some pics going. I have another thread were I was going to buy a diff boat and how I landed this one is a pretty good story!

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

....sure thing Cordell.
The prop I currently have on it is a 15 pitch. I have a 17 pitch which I'm going to be trying over the next month or so to see how it affects performance. The motor (90hp Force) is the original motor and has about 300-325 hrs on it. The compression is good all around (all north of 125psi).
The boat starts, runs and takes off very well...no problems whatsoever so far on about 35-ish outings. My top speed last year was in the high 30's touching 40 on a good day. I had it tuned/serviced prior to winter and this year its hitting 40+....or so says the speedo.
Regardless, it goes pretty good. I'm going to get a buddy of mine with a ski-nautique to give me some more accurate speed measurements if those are not.
It's a good lookin' boat for the year....kind of sleek. The floor is solid, the upholstery is good, etc. Fortunately it was well looked after. This speaks to the point of having a boat that has a good history rather than going by name alone I guess.;)
Anyways, it planes well (no trim and tilt....yet). The only thing I would like to do to it is the steering is starting to get stiff and the drive/seating position is too low and far back. I find myself up on one knee most of the time looking over the windshield to see....which given its radical slope has prompted me to nearly glue on my B-ball cap when I'm out.
All in all tho' a good boat so far. Post a few pics when you have them.
All good.

On the NADA price guide the 96 1600 16ft 6" 11" beam is listed at 90 hp. 1300 lbs dry.
Measure the transom approximately 20" is a long shaft approximately 15" is a short shaft.

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

It would be interesting to find out just where the info on the Iboats spec sheet came from or what it is/was based upon?
The Capri's came in 3-4 sizes that year (at least). The 17' is easy to spot. However the 18',19' and 20' are a little trickier from a distance to discern the differences (..maybe not the 20').
From what I have seen most of the 20'-ers had i/o's...usually merc v-6/8's. Those 18' and 19's are the tough ones to sort out.
I usually assume that all the 120hp (125hp) boats are the 19's.
Now I'm tempted to go see if I can find that e-mail from Bayliner.;)
I have the original 1990 Capri manual so I'll check it for some info as well.

Try a gps... Most of the speedos are accurate after the 20 mph...

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

I have the 18 although measuring from bow to transom it is 16'6 and from bow to end of boat is 17'10. I am going by the 16'6 as the end of the boat you cant really count as they are just build outs that don't sit in the water like the hull. I am going out to take a few pics after dinner as I have a issue, well a couple of them. lol One the trailer is not the original and is way to small for the boat. The other my 1987 force 85 horse motor has bolts for mounting on the lower portion of the mount only. the upper portion has the little things that you tighten with a wrench, sort of squeeze the mount to the transom. Well the transom is 3 inches thick and my mount on my motor is only 2.5 when open all the way. Back with pics in about a hour tops

Thanks! You should see it on the trailer in person it looks funny, that trailer is just way to small! I am gonna have to launch and somehow lift up the wood rails that support the boat so my motor will fit. I was thinking someplace has to sell brackets that will also do this, just haven't went looking yet.

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

That length measurement is interesting. I wondered that myself in terms of what comprised an 18' boat here (at least as advertised)....or 17'-10"? I wondered if those two side skim grid platforms were included in the length measurement or not, although I never checked.
Good lookin' little boat tho'. ;)
How is the floor? Solid or? Did you get any factory canvas, etc with it?
Any controls on it? (gauges? tach?....set up for a Force or?)
All Good.

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

Yeah it had the Force 90 hp on it and came with controls. I do have a looks to be major issue though. The transom mount on my 85 horse has the screw down clamps, the transom on my boat is about 1/2 inch to thick for my motor! Ouch...Besides that the floor seems to be good. Someone did replace a bit of it in the front though. I did the jump around all over and the floor didnt flex and I didnt fall through anywhere. I am a pretty big guy so all is well.lol

Re: 1990 bayliner Capri

Ok, the 85hp and 90hp were not supposed to be as different as they seem be there. I thought they would both have the same mount bracket 'depth'.
I would check in with Frank A. in the Force area to see about this.
The short term fix might be to buy a 90hp mount bracket and mount it on your 85hp? again...Frank would know if it fits or not or would undoubtedly have a plan.;)
Ebay has a lot of this kind of stuff....maybe a mount bracket from a 90/120/125 would all fit your motor...opening up a few options? Again...cheap stuff, low risk off of Ebay which is good news
Anywhoooo, my two bits...but I'd query Frank on it to start.
Keep me posted, I'm interested in how things go.;)
