I have a 1990 Bayliner and I am trying to remove the old pin striping and the decals. What is the best way to go about this with out causing damage to the hull? I will not be replacing them with anything other than a good polishing! Any and all tips/tricks are greatly appreciated!! Boat.jpg

If they are vinyl stripes and decals, I found that a nice fresh single-edge razor blade worked great, with Windex or Dawn+water in a spray bottle for lube. I was able to get them started with the blade, then pull on the loose end while 'helping' with the soap and blade and pulled off long strips. Don't use a lot of pressure on the blade, and hold it at a very low angle to the hull to avoid scratches.

If they are lacquer decals (so thin you can't feel an edge), or to get the small pieces more easily, you can look on Google for "decal eraser" wheels that will fit a drill.

Thanks. I've tried the razor but they are so dry rotted that they just flake apart and it's almost impossible to pull anything off. I've read a lot about the erasers but not sure how I feel about using it. I know the finish needs a good buffing as well but I've seen the damage a buffing wheel can do and kind of leery about purposefully spinning something directly on the surface. I might break down and give it a try though. They wouldn't be so popular if they were bad! Thanks again!!!

Most paint stores sell plastic razor blades that will not penetrate the gel coat or you could order one Amazon.com: 25 Plastic Double Edged Razor Blade and Titan Scraper: Home Improvement

Add a hair dryer to the mix and you will be able to scrape them......... a eraser wheel from a parts store will also work.

Be advised that you will end up with the shadows of where the decals were and those will NEVER go away sonce your hull has faded from UV light so anticipate living with that.

Many graphics places might be able to duplicate what you had and replace the decals and cover the shadowed areas

I have also seen people apply paint stripper to the decals and it will eat into them.

hair dryer and patience. Even brittle will soften up whit a bit of heat. Also I like to use a plastic blade not a razor

Automotive paint supply stores sell a large eraser for drills, simply erase them, wont scuff the finish, when your done, wipe the debris and wax the area you removed the stripes. Good luck!

I have recently read that spray on oven cleaner works good in removing boat decals.

Thanks for all the info and advise. I purchased an eraser on ebay for around $10 with free shipping. It arrived yesterday and even though it was almost dark, I had to try it. It took about 5 minutes to strip the red striping off half of the boat. 3 of those minutes were getting the feel for it and then it was a matter of slowly walking down the boat and watching it disappear! The main decals may be a different story, but this red pin striping was my main target and it's literally wiping it away! Thanks Again! I'll post more pics when it's not raining and I get it finished!

when done taking off decals use final wash or fine prep sold at auto paint stores for removing the stick from hull and wont damage it at all
