have a 1990 evinrude 150 v6. The bendix seems to kick out way too often. New at this so any help is appreciated.;)

Re: 1990 evinrude 150 v6 starter

A couple of things to check: The bendix can kick out if the engine attempts to start and the flywheel rotation overtakes the starter rotation. If you have mis-starting issues with the engine firing when choked, that may not be a bendix issue. Also: If the starter is not getting proper current, it can kick out. Try jump starting the starter with a set of jumper cables. If it starts normally, you may want to test the starter solenoid. If it is old, it may not be passing proper voltage through to the starter. If it does not start normally on jumper cables, I'd look at the brushes inside the starter and the condition of the commutator end of the starter armature. The brushes are replaceable.

When mine did that I shifted it out of gear and opened the throttle, it was flooded and popping but not starting. They're easy to flood if you're unfamiliar with the proceedure.

I've had the same experience with my '90 J-200, and emdsapmgr hit the nail on the head. My carbs needed attention. After taking care of that problem not only did it idle much better but also cured the problem of momentarily "hitting" and forcing the bendix off the flywheel.
