I have read a few post about this already, but none have been for a v6 so here is whats going on with mine.
Today when I was on the lake, I just put in and got going. I was running 80-90% and my alarm started going off. It is a continuous sound. I shut the motor down and waited about 5mins and tured the switch on and it was still on. This has happened one time before and usually that 5 mins did the trick. I just figured the fuel might have picked up some trash. Well this time the alarm stayed on. I even trolled around for an hour fishin' and then turned the switch on and still it was on. The motor still started fine, but acted a little funny when I started to plain out and the rpms came up. I think that maybe my prop. I noticed I had some play in my prop tonight too.
Anyhow, the alarm is still on even 2 hrs after I got home. One guy at the dock told me it might be a fuel restriction. Any advice??
I will also post a prop post too. so come help me there too please.
Thanks,
Channing

Re: 1990 Evinrude 150 xp continuous alarm help

A constant horn warns of an overheat condition, set at 212 degress. On later models, once a horn goes off, there is a signal to the engine to limit engine rpm's to no more than 2500, as protection. Your engine probably has this SLOW feature. If you think it is not overheating, check the head temp sensors/senders to make sure they are both responding to the proper heat ranges. The overheat alarm should go off when the engine cools back down to 175 degrees. The thermostats in the engine are 143, and the engine should run between 143-153 under normal conditions.

I let the motor sit for almost 2 hrs and the alarm was still on. I'm 90 % sure it was not overheating. Where would any fuel restrictions be? Fuel filter,Fuel Pump ect?? Where is the fuel pump? I also think my prop is slipping, would that set off any alarm at all?

I'd also check the horn itself. It is supposed to turn on briefly, each time the key is switched on, as a test-then shut off. While rare, they have been know to stay on for no reason.

Another cause is a oil tank float switch is defective. The epoxy holding the magnet to the bottom of the float failed.

Before ordering a new switch assy, follow the wires into the engine and simply unplug the electrical connector. turn on Ign, Noisy now gone, order the pick up assy, switch not avail separately.
