The starter on one of the motors will not turn fast enough to throw the bendix into engagement with the flywheel. I have spent a good part of yesterday eliminating things that could be causing the problem. So far I have eliminated the battery on that side, the starter, the starter solenoid, the perko off-1-all-2 switch. Through the process of elimination it looks like the only suspect remaining is the ground cable and the hot cable on that side from the perko switch to the starter solenoid.

My question is if I jump from the battery directly to the input of the solenoid and also from ground will that eliminate the wiring as a possible culprit on that side?

Yep. You can also jump straight to the starter to eliminate everything except the starter.

When you say "one of the motors" we assume you have 2 motors. Just swap starters. If the problem follows the starter, thats it!

Dhadley, that is how I eliminated the starter and solenoid as being the problem. I put them both on the other motor and both worked like new.

I just got back from a NAPA store getting a good set of jumper cables, hooked the ground side up from the battery to the motor and hit the key. It sounded like a new setup.

Pulled the ground cable out, went and had a new one made up and will put it on after lunch.

The thing is, the old one didn't have a nick or cut anywhere on the insulation and no corrosion on the ends. Put a meter on and the reading will gradually increase. I guess you can't always go by the outward appearance.
:D

FYI, I changed out the ground and hot wire on the starboard motor, the one that was giving me trouble starting for some time now and discovered that one of the wires must have been going bad for some time. Now it fires up like a new motor. I think I will go ahead and change out the port side also.

Those things can drive you absolutely nuts. Yes, I've had those cables that look fine and somehow they have a place inside thats a problem. Seen it on all kinds of cables where someone has used a test light with the "icepick" end. Real small hole and some time down the road the wire is bad.

Glad you got them going again!
