Just got a 1990 Grady w/ 2-225s (1990). Really suck gas and articles indicate they leave quite a trail of unburned fuel in the water. Considering upgrade to new 2001 Evinrude 225s. Any thoughts about 4 strokes instead? Can the alternators can power an additional set of batteries? Any good folks to do the repower in Redondo Beach or South Los Angeles area?

If those motors are set up properly and hitting on all 12, there is no reason for them to be gas hogs or "leave a trail of unburned fuel". Yes, fuel injected motors, especially the two strokes, will be more efficient but then youre not comparing apples to apples.

Tell us more about your current set up and how they run. Make sure they are running properly and are set up correctly.

Good luck!

The newer Evinrudes have a battery isolator circuit to separately charge another battery.

You didnt say how long the boat is, but I asume that if it has two 225s then it is quite heavy! Think about it, even if those motors are running perfectly you are running 450 HP! How good of milage do you think your car would get if it had two motors? I have an 18" Bass boat W/150 HP and I hate to think how much more fuel I would burn if I had two of them!

You might think about this! You are going to push $20,000 even after trade in to replace these motors just for a minor amount of savings! If you go to four strokes you will not have the oil smell to deal with if you are trolling though! Might make your wife happier!

Like they say, If you are going to play you are going to pay!

And as one of our previous Presidents once said, " I feel your pain" !

Honestly there is no intent to sound smart @#%#!
I just tend to not have much tact :)

Hope you enjoy your new boat and get it running the best that is possable!

Hasbeen

Thanks for the comments. Since the engines appear to be running ok (it's a 28' Grady White), and the boat weighs 7000 lbs without engines, I'm not expecting incredible mileage. However, I read a recent article about poor mileage and "raw fuel" being ejected through the exhause due to the older style 2 strokes. Will let you know where it goes from here. Thanks.

Really, really old motors maybe. I'd like to see that article.

I will try to find the article and attach it. My recollection is that it was research performed by Univ of Utah.
