When I first acquired this motor, it idled fine. But when you went to advance the throttle past 2500 rpm it died. I settled on the carbs as my problem area and rebuilt them. The top carb was relatively clean, but the bottom was FOULED seriously (black nasty crud, not vanish, but CRUD). After three cans of carb cleaner, two rebuild kits, and lots of time. The carbs were rebuilt and installed.

With much anticipation I headed to the lake for the second attempt at a maiden voyage. This time, I was able to reach 3200 rpms before the engine idled down or died (not an all or sudden stop, just a smooth deacceleration). I decided to pump the fuel bulb while throttling up the motor. I was shocked when the boat took off and jumped immediatly on plane, but slowed when I released the pressure from the fuel line.

On to the question. This is a VRO2 motor. I have heard there are rebuild kits for the fuel side of this pump. Where can I find such a kit? I have checked with my previous suppliers and can't find this kit. I have toyed around with the idea of going back to premix. If the VRO is starting to give me trouble, I will switch to a new fuel pump and do away with the entire VRO set up. Sorry but $250 for an oil/fuel mixer is not worth it to me. I would much rather spend that money on a fuel pump and gas to run the boat.

But I can't find specifics on which pump to install and what is needed to make the switch from VRO to premix.

The motor seems closer to being where I want it than ever before, but I am still sitting on the dock instead of fishing. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

One final question - Tilt/Trim rebuild. It is time for new seals in my hydraulic ram (fluid leaks out and needs to be replaced on a daily basis). I have seen the kits on ishopmarine.com . Anything I need to know about this before I order the parts and get underway.

Thanks for all the help,

You can find the fuel only side rebuild kit at the link below. You might also want to check out ebay for a new pump. Sometimes they are reasonable on there. I would stick with the VRO if it's feasable for you. The change to a straight fuel pump is fairly basic if you decide to go that route. I have done it to my 70 HP rude and now pre-mix. But that's just the way I prefer it...

Couple things Ginder.....make sure the fuel tank is venting. Take a look at the fuel lines and make sure all are still plyable and attached firmly to connections. Is the primer bulb OK.....does it pump up firmly on cold starts?

The "regular" fuel pump you can use is PN 433720 or 438556. Only difference is the 438556 has a threaded outlet nipple that screws into the pump body.

BRP does offer a fuel pump diaphram kit for the VRO's and a motor diaphram kit as well. Both are listed in the P&A book which I don't have at home. A J/Rude dealer should be able to help you with this.

I used the 438559 on mine. It had the inlet/outlet/ pulse hose fitting...I'm sure Jim remembers my switch-out...

The tank was FULLY vented, and the hose is new.

I thought I was ready to get this darn boat on the water, and then this!

I do have concerns with the VRO2. After all, it is 17 years old. And the consequences way out way the benefit. If the VRO is bad or goes out, I have lost a motor. If I switch to a stright pump, I deal with premix. Afterall, that is all I have done with every other boat I ever owned.

What about the wires/warning horn. Do I just disconnect then at the VRO or should I do something else?

Thanks for the thoughts and part numbers. I was baffled at first, but once again. Iboats to the rescue!

I disconnected the malfunctioning VRO (yes, it really did). As for your question about alarms, yes you will need to not just unplug the VRO, but disconnect wires elsewhere if yours is like my 1986. I did it by process of elimination. Be sure not to disable the overheat alarm, just the oil level and oil pressure alarms. Sorry, I know this is very general info.

Pre-mix is safer, Harvey
