More questions than answers:

I just acquired this motor. When I bought the motor it came to me in a pile of parts and wires. The lower unit was off, half the wires were disconnected, and the VRO was disconnected.

I have read enough to know that dumping the VRO and using premix is my first course of action. Any tips for disassembling/removing this system from my motor.

Secondly, after quickly glancing over a parts breakdown I notice I am missing a handful of small parts in the lower unit (water pump assembly and the lower shift linkage). Were is the best (most affordable) place to locate these parts.

Third - What is the recommended manual for this model?

Forth - There are two sets of wires coming from the control unit "Bundle 1" - (green with white stripe, red with white stripe, and blue with white stripe) "bundle 2" - (Grey, Black, Purple). Any clue what these are and where to attach them?

Fifth - The main battery leads have been unhooked. I can see where the red (hot) wire attaches to the selonoid. But where do I ground the black wire out?

Sixth - Anything else I need to know about my new motor? I am upgradeing from a 1967 Mercury 35 hp. Things are a little different on this new model.

Thanks for all the help, I used to frequent the Mercury side of this forum. So, I am testing the waters as I cross sides.

The wires with the white stripes are for the tilt switch on the motor. The other group sound like they should go to the vro, but there should also be a brown wire with them for the warning horn. The black wire grounds out on a bolt on the block-I forget exactly where but it doesn't really matter. Doesn't it come off the solenoid?-so somewhere around there. I guess you don't like vro-it's really very dependable and simple.

I have heard too many stories of the VRO pump going out and MAJOR engine damage that followed. I have run premix in all my boats till this one. What are the advantages to VRO over pre-mix?

Can I lengthen the wires without causing much of a problem? I think I will need to add 5-8 feet, can I cut and splice in needed wire (same gauge) and make the run?

The trim tilt wires can be lengthened-no problem-cut and splice ok. I ran an Evinrude shop in Alaska for 11 summers for commercial fishermen and never saw an engine that was damaged due to the vro-but weigh all opinions. This article is very informative:
