I have a 1990 Evinrude 6 HP that runs great, however It's hard to start the first time I use it. Once started it will run great and restart on the first pull each time.

Sometime I have to squirt a little starting flude into the plastic air filter, I don't even have to remove it just a little squirt on the outside and she starts right up.

Things I checked:

The chock when pulled seems to completly close and appears to function properly.

Made sure the trottle handle was in the "Start" position.

I don't know what else to check.

Please help.

Re: 1990 Evinrude 6 HP Hard Start

In the order starting with what you find the easiest:

Open the throttle as wide as the interlock with the starter mechanism will allow.
Check/clean/regap/replace plugs (0.030" gap if not fitted with surface gap plugs)
Check spark with spark tester
Test compression (had to say it as someone will)
Check/adjust slow running mixture adjustment
Consider a carb clean.
Make sure the carb flap really is closing fully

Some of those it almost certainly wont be.

You are using fresh fuel 50:1 with TCW-3 oil?

You are priming the fuel system properly?

Using starting fluid is bad .... no oil!
