Hi everyone!! <br /><br />I'm having problems getting started removing the lower unit from my engine to replace the water pump on my 1990 evinrude 90hp vro v4.<br /><br />I have a Seloc manual and it says I have to disconnect the shift rod under the carbs. The manual says that it will either be a nut and bolt, or a pin with a cotter pin.<br /><br />Thats not what I have. I have a pin installed with no head on either end. And it appears that it is bucked in with a rivet gun type of device. Tried pushing it out with a small drift, (knowing that I'd never get it back in ther in a million years)!!! No joy. The pin that is installed still has the blue paint on it as well as the splined arm connected to it so I assume it has never been out.<br /><br />Is there a hidden disconnect somewhere like in the older models? Or am I going to have to remove the carbs and drill out this pin and replace it with a bolt later.<br /><br />Thanks for the help!

The cotter pin is on the shift linkage on the starboard side of the motor where the linkage goes in under the carbs from the side. Disconnect the shift cable, pull the pin and push the linkage assemble sideways toward the other side of the motor and it should release the shift shaft.

Thanks for the fast response!<br /><br />I've looked at both sides and there isn't any cotter pin. Both ends are flush inside the hole. The pin doesn't have any head on it.<br /><br />Any other ideas?

Hey Sunbird...welcome to iboats!<br /><br />Yours has a screw in bolt pin....don't know what else to call it. You have to get to it from the port side of the engine.....yea...ya' gotta go throught all the fuel lines and junk on the VRO.<br /><br />Shift the engine into forward...this will get the shift lever under the lower carb, down. If you look back in there with a flashlight, you will see where the shift rod comes up through and is attached to the shift lever. You will also see a 3/8" bolt head. This 3/8" bolt head is what you have to get out. I find that a 1/4" drive socket set with a universal joint works well for this. Put a piece of masking tape in the socket head so you don't lose the bolt. When you see the lever, it will be kinda' triangular in shape. Remove the shift lever pin and the six bolts holding the lower unit on and the lower unit should slide right off.<br /><br />If you get confused....have a longneck Bud or four and get back with us.....LOL....nawwwww....drop a post and we'll help out.<br /><br />Good Luck!!

Thanks guys, Walker had it right on. Got her out no prob! I was looking for a pin on the inner linkage.<br /><br />Funny how the aftermarket manual didn't mention this method. I guesse there is soo many variations that they overlooked this type. This may be the easiest of the bunch. I quesse I should wait and see how it goes back together! Ha ha!<br /><br />The next item for the boat I'm buying is an OEM manual!!!<br /><br />Thanks again

Oops - I lost the text I was typing before pressing "send"<br /><br />Is the above reference for removing the shift linkage the same for a 1985 E 40 hp (s/n/1013429, model E40ELCO)?

Thanks very much to all - what a PITA, espically when the manual is as vague as it is...I'll report later on the water pump replacement, which is what I started to do (a week or so ago)

Bigbear....search up Ken Cook Co., marine.com or the outboardwizard. You can can get factory service manual and parts book reprints from them. Beat the generics to death.

Re: 1990 EVINRUDE WATER PUMP

is this shaft supposed to come all the way out or just travel about a half an inch to the port side? i had the coter pin actually it was a hitch pin...pulled that out but i also see the bolt on the port side that obj described ...i cant get the arm that goes on the stbd side of the shaft off and and the shaft only only slides about a half an inch to port until the arm butts up against the housing...i dont see any thing else holding this arm on the shaft and dont understand what the hitch pin is there for if not to hold an inner shaft to an outer one
