Just got this 1990 bayliner Cuddy with a 90 force 120hp. I just replaced the battery and starter with a new one. I had it out on the water today. Was running around great. I loaded up the boat went home and 5 hours later I took the family out.

Well it wouldn't start at the dock. Battery termanal got really hot, pos side, It actually burnt my fingers. I checked the connections and they are on correctly.

Thinking it may have something to do with the stator? Any suggestions.

The battery was dead, so its on the charger now. Will post more once I know more.

thanks

OK battery all charged up, Varoom it started right up with the Muffs on. Check the battery with my volt meter and is reading 12V with it running, with it turned of it still reads 12v. So either my Voltage regulator is out or Stator?

Ok after further troubleshooting, there is not regulator but a recitfier. I checked the rectifier with my meter and it checks out good.

Does anyone know how to check the Stator?

Stator produces current to provide spark and charge the battery.
If the engine runs, the stator is producing current (working).

There is also a lead that runs to the rectifier to produce dc, to charge the battery. If the voltage across the battery is only 12v while running, then either the rectifier is faulty, the wire leading to the rectifier is broken, or the stator is not putting out current on those windings.

I believe the hot battery post is a separate issue, caused by a huge current draw (dead short) somewhere. Likely the positive cable grounding out somewhere, or a hot lead somewhere else grounding out.

Possible the motor's not charging and it was depleted when you went to restart. It was drawing too much current in its weakend condition and causing the terminal to get hot.A loose connection or the smallest connection will heat up first.Like a light bulb.Possible the starter is getting worn out/old brushes/dirty???
