OK...bought a 1990 Quantum 1600 X/B (Bayliner brand) bass-type boat with a '90 Force 50hp motor.
Started it up during sale while on muffs, started right up, shifted well, etc.
At home, on muffs, starts right up almost as quick as you turn the key.
Take it out to the lake this weekend. Get it launched, motor dies...rough idle initially, something not exhibited during starts/idles while on trailer.
Then it dies and almost refuses to restart. After many, many attempts to restart, it slowly begins to catch then starts, but idle is rough.
But it motivates well with throttle so we go out. After a half hour of running at various throttle positions, turn it off to have a bite to eat.
Ten minutes later, try to restart and it won't. Again, after multiple(!) tries, it slowly begins to catch and finally starts well enough to advance the throttle into forward and get underway without it dying.
Head back and trailer it.
On a lark, a couple of minutes later while tying it down, I try to restart it....fires right up and idles smoothly.
Today, a couple of days later, put the muffs back on and start it....and it fires right up and idles well.
Aberration? It had been sitting for a couple of months, but had been on the water this summer a few times before we purchased it.
Just found it odd that the motor starts easily, idles well, no problems at all while it's on the trailer, but once it's in the water, it has extremely hard starts and rough idles.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
