A little background on myself. I got the boat bug about three years ago. Since then I've owned a 1981 pristine 260SRV Sea Ray Sundancer and a 200CC Sea Ray Cuddy...also pristine. The story goes like this...

Times were good at work and making good money. I bought my 260 from a business referral. As proud owner, I ran to the nicest marina and rented a slip. Man that was a great boat and year.

Well, economy turned and income suffered. Sold the 260 and used the residual after paying bills to buy the 200CC. Again, really nice boat for the money and kept the slip to enjoy the marina life.

Things weren't getting better so sold that one too. It's been a year and I just can't shake the boat fever!! So what did I do, bought a nice project on eBay. A 1990 Glasstream 172 B/R Cutlass for $600, trailer included. Everything is there but needs some TLC. Seemed like an interesting choice since I haven't seen many of these out there. The seller disclosed that the block is cracked but compared to my 4.3 and and 260 Merc, seems pretty simple. Interior is all there but needs to be replaced.

Sorry to bore you with the story but this is my first post before I dive in tomorrow stripping the interior. I'll post some before and after pics. This isn't going to be a high dollar resto but hopefully will be inspiring to all us "semi-handy, average Joes" who have suffered but can't shake that itch to be on the water.

Tomorrow is day one so here we go:

Day One: Start stripping interior including all uphlolstery, bolsters, etc. Pretty simple layout and my plan is to save the pieces to use a templates. Floors feel solid but just knowing the condition of the upholstery that they are going to have to come up as well. I'm diving in early so we'll see how far I get. Going to shoot a bunch of before pics tomorrow and will post.

Stay tuned!!

CoralReefer,
Welcome to Iboats.
It's nice to see another Glasstream on here. Not many of us.
As Bob VT said we are photo junkies.
Looking forward to seeing your project.

Bob,

Thanks for the note. Small world...My hometown is Elizabethtown, KY and now in Nashville. I'm sure I'll be calling on you for advice. Thanks again!

CoralReefer,
It really is a small world. I live in Cecilia which is only 10 miles west of E-Town, but I work in Milan,Tn west of Nashville. 100+ miles west of Nashville.

Just let me know if I can help, I'll be glad to do anything I can. If you need glass supplies there's a great place right in Nashville.
Take care.

Bob,

Not sure I'm going to take the project as far as you did. I couldn't imagine pulling the top cap off like you did. As you can see by my house, not much room to work. As someone who's basically rebuilt the boat, any advice on just doing a "cosmetic" resto vs. rebuild? I have basically nothing in the boat and don't want to spend thousands more than the boat is worth to restore. I just want to end up with something presentable and safe that I can proud of and enjoy that water.

CoralReefer,
Looks like a nice project. You might want to resize to 640 X 480 before the mod's see them. It's easy to do on Photo bucket.
Keep us posted and the pic's coming.

Well day one is done. Man! I'm out of shape! I'm going to be sore tomorrow. Anyway. I started by pulling out all the seating. Frames and hardware are good but the upholstery and wood in all the seats and bolsters are mulch.

I was really worried about the floor just by looking at the carpet which was really bad. To my surprise, the floors look pretty good. There's only a slight weak spot aft of the ski locker. I think it will all clean up well and I have enough room under the rear of the ski locker to put a reinforcement block. Other than that, solid.

Carpet came up really easy. There's still some left to come out but the big part is done. I am hung a little under each side of the dash. There appears to be a sheet of carpeted plywood secured up under each side that house speakers. For the life I me I couldn't see how they are secured.

I think I made pretty good progress today. More stripping and cleanup to go. It'll be next weekend before I dive in again. More stripping ahead. My plan is to get all the old out and then re-carpet myself. I'm juggling the idea of doing the upholstery (bolsters and jump seats with plywood, foam, and vinyl). I'll probably buy a new plain white back to back and helm to complete. Let me know what you think so far.

CoralReefer,
Good start. I know how it is to only get to spend a little time on the boat.
Just keep at it.

Re: 1990 Glasstream 172 Cutlass Restoration

Finally got all the interior out including carpet. Washed her today and then re-washed with Comet and Scotch Brite pad. Let dry and then started to wet sand. I started with on the swim platform just to make sure my process worked. I started with 800 grit, then 1000, then 1500, keeping it very wet. I then used Meguires Compound with orbital and made one cut. Then used IBIZ waterless wash and wax to finish to see what shine I could get. You be the judge. Let me know what you think. I'm finishing the rest tomorrow. Here's a few shots:

I still want to make another one or two cuts with compound. I used 3M paper wrapped around a sponge and it worked pretty well.

If you're wondering about the wax, IBIZ, it's a family run business out of Pompano Beach, FL. I've known the owner for years and it's endorsed by Jaguar, Corvette Clubs, and Aviation Companies around the world. Best kept secret and great product.

Looks like the panels where attached with just screws and screw caps, pretty easy. Thanks for looking!
