I have a 1990 Lowe Model 1940V w/ a 70hp Johnson model VJ70TLESB, I would like to move up to 100hp or bigger, the boat is rated for a 120hp, I was told that the mounting bolts for a 120 are the same, if this is true, what yrs am I restricted to? also, will the OMC controls on the boat ie: steering & throttle match up?

The transom bracket mounting holes are all the same. The steering cable should also match up with no problem. The the control box for the 1996 and newer engines have different electrical connectors. If you want to buy a 1996/newer engine, you will need an electrical adapter (which is available) to make your old control box work on the newer engine. Control cables will also match up.
