I just purchased a used 1990 Johnson 8hp J8RESR. It starts up well when cold and runs great, but sometimes has a hard time restarting when warm. Seems to need a lot of throttle and sometimes some choke. Fuel is fresh and clean. Spark and compression are in good shape and carb was properly removed and cleaned. I'm wondering if the carb adjustment might be a little off. Does anyone have any ideas or know what the factory spec is for the adjustment? I read in one post that it's 1.5 turns out, but there's also a video of a very similar evinrude version where the guy says the spec is 3 turns out but he runs his at 5.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

nothing to lose trying it at 3 or 5..I'd suggest you take a timing light or spark tester with you next time out and make certain you are not losing spark when trying to restart the engine hot

Maybe.... :)
If you don't have the manual, you are guessing. I have the same motor. I would not dream of tackling this carb w/o my manual.
My 1974 6HP I can do from memory and 30 years of doing that type of carb. These new versions all have some peculiarities.
How did you check the float setting?

My manual says 2-1/2 turns on the LS needle..

Thanks for the quick responses. My friendly mechanic thinks it's running lean and there shouldn't be a problem trying quarter or even half turns of the adjustment screw. In the meantime, I found an owners manual and service manual for the 1990 model on ebay.
