Re: 1990 Johnson9.9 dying after 5 mins
Hi maxpower. Welcome to the board.

The gas is probably bad. A tune up would be a great idea. Here's some things to check.

Check engine compression. You should have at least 90psi on each cylinder.
Using a spark checker, check ignition.
Change out the spark plugs.
Change out the lower unit gear lube. Check the old lube for signs of water. The oil will be a milky color or the water will be readily apparent. If the oil comes out just black, yer way over do for new lube.
If the new gas gets the engine going, decarb engine with engine tuner. This is readily available in several different brand names.
If she runs, check engine temp. You should be able to put your finger on the flat place just behind the head for a few seconds before having to remove your finger.
Get a service manual from the local Johnny/Rude dealership. This will tell you how to do all the above and then some. With the age of your engine, a carb rebuild and water pump impeller change out would be a great idea. The manual will take you through it step by step.
